Fall Fatigue: Why It Happens and What Actually Helps

Every year it seems to happen at the same time. Autumn arrives, the days get shorter, and suddenly your energy is nowhere to be found. You feel tired during the day, but when it’s finally time to sleep, your brain decides it’s wide awake.
There are a few reasons for that.

Why do we feel more tired in autumn?

Less daylight can affect your vitamin D levels, and vitamin D plays a role in much more than bone health. It’s also linked to immune function and mood. Shorter days can also influence serotonin, which helps regulate how you feel emotionally.
Then there’s the change in routine. Summer ends, work and school schedules pick up again, mornings get darker, and sleep can become less consistent. Your body is trying to adjust to a different rhythm while you’re also dealing with more day-to-day stress.

What can autumn fatigue feel like?

  • Feeling tired even after a full night's sleep
  • Irritability or changes in mood
  • Getting colds more often
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Craving sugary foods and carbs

So what actually helps?

Get outside in the morning.
Even 20 to 30 minutes of daylight can help support your natural body clock.

Keep your sleep routine fairly consistent.
Going to bed and waking up at similar times can make a bigger difference than people think.

Pay attention to nutrition.
Vitamin D, magnesium, B vitamins and omega-3s are all worth keeping an eye on during the colder months.

Move a little every day.
You don’t need an intense workout. A walk can help with stress, energy and sleep.

Use supplements when they actually make sense.
If your diet isn’t covering everything you need, targeted supplements can help fill the gaps. It’s better to choose what you genuinely need rather than taking a bit of everything.

Small changes can make a difference

Autumn tiredness doesn’t always need a dramatic fix. More daylight, better sleep, regular movement and a few smart changes to your routine can make a noticeable difference.
